Acoustic: Getting Sound Control Right

Lobby acoustics are frequently under-specified because the problem isn’t obvious on a drawing — it only becomes obvious once the space is built, furnished, and full of people.

Why lobbies are prone to echo. Hard flooring, glass curtain walls, and stone reception desks all reflect sound rather than absorb it. Without some acoustic treatment in the ceiling — the largest continuous surface in the room — conversations at the front desk, lobby bar noise, and rolling luggage can build into a reverberant, fatiguing environment.

Don’t treat acoustics as invisible. But the pattern’s open-area percentage still needs to stay in the range that the cavity and infill were designed for, or the visual design and the acoustic performance will work against each other.

A note on specifying NRC. NRC is not a fixed material constant — it’s a function of the full assembly (perforation rate, panel thickness, cavity depth, infill type and density), not a number that belongs to “aluminum ceiling panels” as a category. Any NRC value written into a spec should be backed by a lab test report for that exact construction (ASTM C423 is the standard test method), not estimated from the panel type alone.

Finish: Specifying for Appearance and Longevity

The finish decision affects both how the ceiling looks on opening day and how much it costs to keep it looking that way five years later.

Color matters as much as resin type. Metallic and silver tones (aluminum-powder pigments) typically show 3–5 fewer years of color retention than organic-pigment colors in the same coating system, because the metal pigment oxidizes faster. Saturated colors — bright red, bright yellow — are the least weather-stable of all; even under a PVDF system, it’s reasonable to plan for roughly 80% of the stated service life for these colors.

Match the coating grade to the actual exposure category. A coating spec written for a C2 inland environment will underperform its stated service life if the actual project site is a coastal or high-humidity C4/C5 location. On most hotel lobby specifications, fire classification is checked before acoustics or finish are even discussed — a ceiling system that fails the fire requirement doesn’t get evaluated on any other criteria, regardless of how it performs elsewhere.
